Acupressure
The Chinese have used acupressure as a natural treatment for thousands of years. There are hundreds of acupressure points on the body on specific Meridians that conduct energy though the body.
Your Chakras are the pathways and your Meridians are the distributors of the energy.
Stimulation of acupressure points has been shown to stimulate nerves and muscles. When energy blockages are cleared the body is allowed to heal. MRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) studies have shown that stimulation of certain acupressure points directly stimulates unexpected areas of the brain!
Acupressure was developed in Asia more than 5,000 years ago, actually pre-dating its needled counterpart, acupuncture. Both therapies are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and excel in different ways. Acupressure was all but unknown in the United States until Richard Nixon first visited China in the 1970s. It is now practiced by Acupuncturists and those trained in other styles of massage. Going to an Acupressure practitioner is similar to going to a Massage Therapist. After filling out the appropriate intake forms, clients are introduced to the Acupressure therapist. The practitioner diagnoses a client's condition through careful observation of the tongue, complexion, attitude and demeanor and will often take the patient's pulse. Some therapists will use sight; others touch, to determine where imbalances are located. After locating these points, the Acupressure therapist uses palpation to stimulate the appropriate areas, guiding energy throughout the body.

Advantages of Energy Therapy
Charles Figley, Ph.D., of the Psychological Stress Research Program and Clinical Laboratory at FloridaStateUniversity reported five advantages of using TFT (and energy therapy) over all other tested therapeutic approaches in reducing the impact of trauma. Figley stated:
1. It is powerful. All clients (in his study) received nearly immediate relief and this appears to be permanent.
2. It can be taught to anyone so clients can treat themselves and others.
3. It appears to do no harm.
4. It does not require the client to talk about their troubles.
5. It works.
In addition, Energy Therapies do not involve surgical procedures, needles, pain, pills or chemicals, pushing or pulling on the body and have no side effects. And they are very fast, taking only a few minutes have no side effects at all and can be self-administered anytime, anywhere and these techniques are very fast, taking only a few minutes, have no side effects at all and can be self-administered anytime, anywhere.
Acupressure
Acupressure is essentially a technique used to access and release blocked or congested energy centres in the body. Chinese cultures believe the points to be junctures of meridian pathways that carry energy called chi. Modern scientists have also map out and prove the existence of these points using electrical devices.
The Tradition
Acupressure is based on the principles of chi, which is a fundamental concept of the Traditional Chinese Medicine that energy flows through the fourteen meridians of the body. During Holistic Massage finger pressure is applied to a number of points along the body to relieve great amounts of tension and treat specific ailments. There are about 365 acupoints in total, although only 32 are used in Acupressure; each a delicate nerve ending which acts as valves to stimulate the flow of chi (energy) through the meridians (energy channels), and rebalance the body's internal network. The key focus of this treatment is to harmonise the body and balance out the 'Yin and Yang' which are opposite, yet complimentary forces believed to underline all aspects of life. This compromises both the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems, which is important for general well being and tranquility.
The Science
The accumulation of toxins in muscle tissue causes stiffness throughout the body and puts abnormal pressure on the nerves, resulting in tension and lack of feeling, and blood and lymph vessels, which can affect both skeletal systems and internal organ functioning. Acupressure promotes natural self-curative abilities and removes energy blockages by diffusing the toxic build up that accumulates by applying pressure to the areas.
Acupressure applied during Holistic Massage can be used to improve the seriousness of and sometimes treat certain conditions; it can also ease tension and aches and pains as well as reducing stress levels, and preventing future illness.

How is it used?
When you stimulate acupressure points, you also stimulate different internal organs and especially hormone
glands, which control the level of hormones in your body. As you know, hormones literally control our body and by mastering them you master your body and your mind.
Acupressure Point Therapy releases tension, increases the circulation of blood, and heightens the body's vital life energy to aid healing. Acupuncture points and Acupressure points are identical; however Acupuncture employs needles, while Acupressure points use gentle but firm finger pressure. Acupressure points relieve pain, trauma, burnout, and maintains good health through self-care. By relaxing the body and relieving stress, acupressure strengthens resistance to disease and promotes wellness.Acupressure can be done on the bare skin or through clothing. However, more accuracy is achieved on the bare skin.
Tension tends to concentrate around acupressure points (also referred to as acupoints or acu-points). When a muscle is in spasm or chronically tense, the muscle fibers contract due to the secretion of lactic acid caused by fatigue, trauma, stress, chemical imbalances, or poor circulation.
Benefits of Acupressure
- Increases energy through the stimulation of acupoints
- Releases toxins that are stuck in the body
- Relieves muscular tension and relaxes the nerves
- Releases trapped emotions
As an Acupressure point is held, the muscle tension yields to the finger pressure, enabling the muscle fibers to elongate and relax, blood to flow freely, and toxins to be released and eliminated. Increased circulation also brings more oxygen and other nutrients to affected areas. This increases the body's resistance to illness and promotes a longer, healthier, more vital life. When the blood and bioelectrical energy circulate properly, there is a greater sense of harmony, health, and well-being.
Acupressure is known by several names: Shiatsu, Anma, Anmo, Tuina, AMMA Therapy®, Nuad Bo ‘Rarn or Traditional Thai Bodywork. These all fall into the category of Asian Bodywork Therapy (ABT) and are primarily based on Traditional Chinese Medicine theories.
An acupressure session might involve stretching the body, holding points, stimulating points, and therapeutic massaging of the points or meridian channels.
Acupressure Points for Stress Relief
Acupressure's potent points can be used to enhance many aspects of life. In addition to managing stress, you can use acupressure to relieve and prevent sports injuries. Sports massage has been widely used by athletes before and after Olympic events. Acupressure complements sports medicine treatments by using points and massage techniques to improve muscle tone and circulation and relieve neuromuscular problems.
Although acupressure is not a substitute for medical care, it is often an appropriate complementary treatment. It can, for instance, speed the healing of a broken bone once it has been set, or aid a cancer patient by helping to alleviate some of the associated pain and anxiety of the disease.
Similarly, acupressure can be an effective adjunct to chiropractic treatment. By relaxing and toning the back muscles, acupressure makes the spinal adjustments easier and more effective, and the results last longer.
In fact, the two therapies were originally practiced together in ancient China.
Psychotherapy patients can derive benefits from acupressure by using it to heighten body awareness and deal with stress.
When powerful emotions are free and unresolved, the body stores the resulting tension in the muscles.
Acupressure can help restore emotional balance by releasing the accumulated tension caused by repressed feelings. An acupressure point actually has two identities and ways of working. When you stimulate a point in the same area where you feel pain or tension, it's called a local point. That same point can also relieve pain in a part of the body that is distant from the point, in which case it is called a trigger point. This triggering mechanism works through a human electrical channel called a meridian. The meridians are pathways that connect the acupressure points to each other as well as to the internal organs. Just as blood vessels carry the blood that nourishes the body physically, the meridians are distinct channels that circulate electrical energy throughout the body. They are thought to be part of a master communications system of universal life energy, connecting the organs with all sensory, physiological, and emotional aspects of the body. This physical network of energy also contains key points that we can use to deepen our spiritual awareness as we heal ourselves.
Because the stimulation of one point can send a healing message to other parts of the body, each acupressure point can benefit a variety of complaints and symptom
