Children Feel and React to Stress Too!
Is your child having trouble getting along with others, sleeping, eating, not wanting to go to school?
Do they seem down in the dumps or are they acting like they don't care?
It is common for adults to view the world of children as happy and go lucky. What could they possibly have to worry about?
Some children are carefree but some experience negative STRESS symptoms.
Children react to many different situations like: being excluded from games, social conflict, expectations from their academic studies, personal illness, illness of a family member, death of a loved one, separation of parents, divorce, moving, abuse, a fast paced lifestyle, high parental expectations, violence in a real or media presentation, no decision making power, dysfunctional families and many other sources.
Children generally show their STRESS through their behaviours. They appear anxious, fidgety, have poor eye contact, may wet the bed, may have difficulty sleeping, separation anxiety, isolation, show their anger inappropriately, have social conflict, have temper tantrums, are irritable and lack motivation to attempt or complete activities. Some children experience psychosomatic illnesses like headaches and stomach aches. Even very young children have worries and feel stress to some degree. Stress is our emotional and physical response to situations we feel we do not have the resources to deal with.
A child’s perspective of a situation needs to be investigated and their feelings about that incident need to be acknowledged. They need to learn how to make good choices in response to situations that they are uncomfortable with.
If your child continues to show symptoms that concern you and is unwilling to talk it over, it is time to contact get s.m.a.r.t. . Children need to know they are in control of their thoughts, feelings, actions and words. They need to learn that their thoughts will pave the way to their future. They need to be comfortable with taking responsibility for themselves while building their self esteem! Role playing helps children feel comfortable and confident in managing social conflict management and problem solving situations. They learn about relationship building, friendship, values and how to use their power wisely! All of these skills are taught in a comfortable, non-threatening environment, while empowering the child to make the changes they have control over to reduce and prevent further stress in their lives.
Since STRESS is a natural part of life, seize the opportunity to help your children grow and learn how to manage it to their benefit, with a positive attitude and positive ways to manage it.
