Men & Stress

hand ball Men & Stress

Men, statistically, hold their stress within their physical body more so than women. This means you hang on to it and let it fester. You take it inside that “cave” with you, historically. Men, like you, tend to hold it in their chest and shoulder areas. Stress symptoms begin to rear their ugly heads sooner or later and will reveal themselves as physical illness and as emotional distress. Heart palpitations, high blood pressure, angry outbursts, aches, pains, heart attacks and headaches are a few of these physical symptoms. Oesophageal cancer has been on the increase for men over the past ten years – Could there be a connection? Mood swings, a temper with angry outbursts, confusion, difficulty making decisions, poor work performance, lack of motivation, relationship problems and substance abuse are a few of the emotional and behavioural signs of a man in DISTRESS.

Relationships, grief/loss traumatic events, work, parenting and many other situations are sources of stress for men. Child abuse, domestic abuse, emotional, verbal and physical can be the result of a VERY burnt out and stressed individual. This does not only affect men but women too. Men tend to be the abusers when they have lived and grown up to see and learn this behaviour as a result of a stressed household. Locking up emotions, not communicating, feeling less macho to discuss and vent their emotions in a healthy way seems to be the prerequisite for anger seething out through verbal, physical and emotional abuse.
Men need support to be real and honest with themselves, enabling them to feel good about being human, having and expressing feelings in a healthy way, problem solving without using control as a means to an end. The end could be their job, their marriage/relationship, ties to family and friends and possibly legal action. It could mean an open door to depression, anxiety issues and lack of self esteem.

Men are just as successful at releasing trapped emotions as women!!
So come on MEN – you can do it -you can have peace and contentment in your life too!
